Behaviour Blues?
Staff at a Sandwell Primary felt that children’s behaviour was a daily uphill battle and often felt like the most relentless part of their job. The Head noted that this impacted on staff absences and the general mood within school.
Something had to change.
Mrs Rogers – Pastoral and Wellbeing Lead discussed issues with staff and made some changes to how all staff dealt with behaviour…and what a difference it has made!
“Playtimes were often the start of children getting cross. Friendship fallouts, football disagreements etc. would be dragged back into the classroom and lessons never started until issues were dealt with. Lunchtimes were even worse and children never felt that lunch staff listened. Lunch staff just said the children were rude to them!
I introduced the Behaviour Reflection Zone on the playground using a range of signs including school rules, mindfulness challenges for calming down and friendship rules. Before any conversations were had with angry or upset children, they were directed to the behaviour reflection zone. After 5 or so minutes, an adult would speak to them. This gap of time, with the signs as a guide, enabled cross children to calm down and be ready to talk.”
“Having the Behaviour corner is so much better. When the kids get worked up, rather than me shouting at them or just standing them on the wall for time out, they have to read the signs and it helps them calm down. Then they are ready to talk to me politely and I am ready to listen. I only shout now to call the dinners in!” Pam – lunchtime supervisor
“I get really angry when other kids don’t play football right and then I’d get sent to Mr Farmer (HT) for shouting at a teacher and storming off. When I go to the behaviour corner, I can calm down better, I don’t get sent to Mr Farmer and he doesn’t phone my dad” Liam Y6
“We get on with teaching so much quicker after break or lunchtime. We have even used some of the mindfulness challenges in the class as a brain break after a long afternoon or lots of wet playtimes. The kids love these and some improve concentration as well as calming everyone down! That’s a win, win, win!!! Miss McDonald – Y4
